How to transfer files between an iPad and a Windows PC

An iPad can’t AirDrop to a Windows PC, and file sharing through iTunes needs a cable and only works with some apps.

Send files between your iPad and your PC

  1. Get a private link on your PC. Open sharedclipboard.com on your PC and click Get a private link. A QR code appears.

  2. Scan the QR code with your iPad. Point the iPad camera at the code and tap the link. The same clipboard opens in Safari, with nothing to install.
  3. Add your files. Tap Add files on the iPad, or click it on the PC. Files show up on the other device a moment later, and Download saves them.

Other ways to move files between an iPad and a PC

iTunes or the Apple Devices app

Copies files into iPad apps that support file sharing, over a USB cable.

iCloud Drive

Save files to iCloud Drive with iCloud for Windows, and they appear in the Files app on the iPad.

A USB drive

An iPad with a USB‑C port can open a USB drive in the Files app.

Good to know

  • On the iPad, downloaded files go to the Downloads folder in the Files app.
  • Both devices need to be online at the same time. Files go straight from one to the other and are never stored on our servers.
  • Each file can be up to 100 MB.
  • Some work and school networks block direct connections between devices. If a file doesn’t arrive, put both devices on the same Wi‑Fi or use your phone’s hotspot.

Questions

How do I transfer files from my PC to my iPad without iTunes?

Open the same SharedClipboard on both, add the files on the PC, and download them on the iPad. iCloud Drive also works if you use iCloud.

Can I AirDrop from an iPad to a Windows PC?

No. AirDrop only works between Apple devices.

Where do downloaded files go on an iPad?

Into the Downloads folder in the Files app. Photos can be saved to the Photos app from there.
