What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. A HEIC photo looks the same as a JPG at about half the file size.
The catch is support. Windows, many Android phones, older Macs and a lot of websites and office apps can’t open HEIC, so the photo you sent yourself shows up as a file nothing will open.
How to open HEIC files on Windows 11
Windows 11 opens HEIC in the Photos app once you install two extensions from the Microsoft Store: HEIF Image Extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions (Microsoft charges $0.99, and some PCs already have it).
If you only need a few photos, or can’t install apps on a work computer, open them here instead. The viewer shows HEIC photos without installing anything, and you can save the ones you need as JPG.
Stop your iPhone saving photos as HEIC
- Settings, Camera, Formats: choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG from then on. Photos you already took stay HEIC.
- Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC: choose Automatic. Photos copied to a computer with a cable are converted to JPG on the way.
Private by design
Everything happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded, so this works the same with the internet switched off once the page has loaded. The HEIC decoder (about 2 MB) loads the first time you add a HEIC photo; Safari on iPhone and Mac can open HEIC by itself and skips it.
