How to find where a photo was taken
- Add the photo. Drop it on the box above, or click Choose photos. Use the original file from the phone that took it, not a screenshot.
- Read the place and date. The location shows as coordinates with links to Google Maps, Apple Maps and OpenStreetMap, next to the date, time and phone model.
- Remove it before sharing. If a photo shows your home or another private place, use Remove the location to get a clean copy.
Where the location comes from
When location is on for the camera, phones write the GPS position into each photo as it is taken, along with the date, time and phone model. This data is called EXIF, and it travels with the file.
This tool only reads that saved data. It doesn’t recognise places in the picture and doesn’t use AI, so it’s exact when the data is there and says so when it isn’t.
Why a photo has no location
- Screenshots never have one.
- WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and most chat and social apps remove it when they send or post a photo.
- Location was off for the camera. On iPhone: Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Camera.
- The photo was edited or exported by an app that dropped the data.
- Then the original may still have it: check the photo on the phone that took it, or in its cloud library.
See the location on your phone
- iPhone: open the photo in Photos and swipe up. The map shows where it was taken.
- Android: open the photo in Google Photos and swipe up, or tap the three dots, then Details.
- Windows: right-click the file, Properties, Details. Mac: open it in Preview, Tools, Show Inspector.
Private by design
Everything happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded, so this works the same with the internet switched off once the page has loaded. Map links only open when you click them, so the coordinates stay on your device until you choose to look.

Why doesn’t my photo show a location?
The location was never saved, or an app removed it. Screenshots and photos from WhatsApp, Instagram and most chat apps have none.
Can it find the location of any picture from the internet?
Only if the file still has its saved location, which pictures from websites and social networks almost never do. This tool doesn’t guess from what the picture shows.
Does it work with iPhone photos?
Yes, including HEIC photos straight from an iPhone, and JPG, PNG and WebP from any phone or camera.
How do I remove the location from a photo?
Click Remove the location under your photos. It opens the free metadata remover with the same photos and gives you clean copies.
