How to check the size and quality of a photo
- Add the photo. Drop it on the box above, or click Choose photos. JPG, HEIC, PNG and WebP work.
- Read the numbers. You see the size in pixels, megapixels, file size, JPG quality and how large it can be printed.
- Compare versions. Add the copy you received next to the original, and see which is larger and by how much.
How to tell if a photo was compressed
- Fewer pixels than the camera takes. Phone cameras take 12 megapixels or more; chat apps often send 1600 or 2048 pixels on the long side, about 2 to 3 megapixels.
- Lower JPG quality. Phones save photos at about 90% or higher; strongly compressed copies are often 75% or lower.
- Missing camera details. Most apps remove them when they make a copy, so no phone model in the file is a sign it isn’t the original.
Send photos at full quality
- WhatsApp: choose HD before sending, or send the photo as a document to keep the original.
- iMessage sends full size unless Low Quality Image Mode is on in Settings, Messages.
- Mail on iPhone asks for a size when you attach photos: choose Actual Size.
- Between your own devices, SharedClipboard sends the original file, exactly as it is.
How the JPG quality is measured
A JPG file stores the tables it was compressed with. This page compares them with the standard tables to estimate the quality setting, the same way photo editors do. Phones and apps with their own tables can come out a few points off.

The page shows the size it prints sharply at 300 dpi. For posters seen from further away, about twice that size still looks good.
What is a good JPG quality?
Phones save at about 90% or more. 80% to 90% looks the same to most people; below 70% you may see blocks and blurry edges.
